Craw Report: VIPs

Through "networking" I recently was given "VIP" invitations to several events taking place in conjunction with a Major Industry Trade Show.  These invitations were for grazing and/or dinner and open, open, open bar at clubs, restaurants, or lounges in a capital-C American City.

Even with every venue enjoying the benefit of low to no expectations, I would rate more than half of them as time adequately, if not well spent, and a few were actually quite fun.

However, I have no idea who organized the event, to what purpose, or even what their companies do.  Some were "appreciation" events; one ticket noted "my" status as a "valued client."

Has the concept of "VIP" become so devalued that people who know people who know people are now able to take advantage of others' largesse?  Surely the largesse-ers are aware that none of their invitations reached their intended actual VIPs and instead ended up in the hands of a few dozen scrubs who wanted some free drinks and knew someone?  And since similar circumstances allowed me to cross a restaurant off the bucket list, should I worry that this lie agreed on will last forever?
